TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught 1st and 2nd grade for seven years, before becoming a stay-at-home mom to two beautiful boys. Since then, I've become a freelance writer for an online company, where I write about education, parenting and fitness. I love being a stay-at-home mom as much as I loved being a teacher. I'm digging into my old teaching boxes to share some of the things that worked well for me, which has been a great way to dip my toes back into teaching before I get back into the classroom in a year or two.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I used lots of interactive teaching strategies in the classroom, including learning centers, and reading and writing workshop. I integrated poetry and singing into all subjects whenever possible. My classroom management strategies included giving classroom ownership to the students by assigning jobs and responsibilities and rewarding positive behaviors. I believe in positive reinforcement and making each child feel valued every day. Even the most "difficult" students will thrive if you believe in them.
