TEACHING EXPERIENCE

After almost 20 years in the technology field, I changed careers to become an elementary school teacher. I can honesty say that I LOVE MY JOB!! It's like going to a play date everyday where I have a great time shaping little minds and showing them what a wonderful and exciting world we live in. This is my fourth year of teaching. I spent my rookie year in first grade and this is my third year in second grade. I teach in a semi-rural school in Virginia. Update (6/9/13): Just got moved to 5th grade for the next school year! So excited!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I love hands-on activites and partner work. Getting the students excited about learning means getting them thinking and up out of their seats! I'm also a trained troubleshooter (my tech years) so when I child struggles, I put those troubleshooter skills into play and search for ways to reach that child so he understands, grows, and succeeds.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

After high school I attended a trade school to learn about computer systems -both large scale and small scale. I spent almost 20 years working in the IT field doing installations, networking, repair, and troubleshooting. I attended various trainings and am certified in several IT areas. While working in the IT field, it took me 13 years to complete my teaching degree. I went to community college to get the base of the degree and then switched to Western Governors University to complete my degree. This is an online degree program and one of the first nationally and regionally accredited online schools. It was an experience I treasure because I got to experience first hand what education may look like in the near future. The online experience was great, but you just can't replace human touch when it comes to teaching, so I hope that online education does not become the main stay in education at the primary levels. Who know what the future holds though?
