Many people have a fear of science because they think it is hard and beyond comprehension. My joy in teaching science stems from breaking down these misconceptions, and empowering students to embrace science as an integral part of their existence. My style is to make science accessible, relevant, exciting, impressive and logical. I always start all of my teaching lessons and curriculum pieces in a place students are familiar and comfortable. From there, I take them step by step onto whatever journey is being approached that day. Another component of my style is to emphasize the macro-perspective before the micro-perspective. In other words, I make sure students have a firm grasp on the overall idea of what we're discussing before submersing them in details. Application versus rote memorization: You will also find my activities tend to engage the student to apply science vocabulary and concepts versus identifying them.
My greatest awards have come from students who tell me years after being in my class that what we did impacted them and their perspective of science, themselves and the natural world.
