I love creating and developing curriculum, lesson plans, and worksheets. Spending hours of research on a topic such as pirates and finding games, puzzles, books, art projects and activities brings me great joy. Some people knit, others fish, I develop and write hands-on curriculum. You know that saying “find what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”? well I love the challenge of research, gathering, and writing to please you and your kids! I know, crazy, right? But aren’t you glad that I do? I want to help you so you can show your kids that learning can be fun! This website was created out of my passion for children and teaching. It is designed to be a springboard for parents and teachers, motivating and encouraging them to teach and bless the children in their lives. The Story I love creating and developing curriculum, lesson plans, and worksheets. Spending hours of research on a topic such as pirates and finding games, puzzles, books, art projects, and fun activities brings me great joy. Some people knit, others fish, I develop and write hands-on curriculum. You know that saying “find what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”? I love the challenge of creating new unit studies that kids will love because it's fun and parents and teacher will desire because its academic. I’ve been there...unmotivated kids, messy home because we had a successful homeschool day, felt like I count not possible homeschool one more day, endless sibling bickering, and shuffling homeschool off the table so we can eat dinner. I have also had those precious days of being there for my kids when they needed to talk, making memories, going on fun field trips, laughing, taking pictures, playing games, and sincerely enjoying learning and our family time. Life is such a roller coaster! So, how did Discover Unit Studies begin? Once upon a frustrating day, I asked my daughter “what DO you want to learn about then?!!!!!” To my surprise, she said “dragons!” I let out a big sigh and said, fine.... I’ll get you dragon stuff to learn about. And that’s when it all began. I bought her a cool dragon book from answers in genesis, developed my first lesson plan for her and away she went, reading, writing, and doing projects related to something she was interested in. At the end of the school lesson I could check that box, language arts-done, science-done, history-done, and yes, even math-done. I wish I could say that I never went back to textbooks but I continued to try and use them throughout the years because they were easier but my kids would get bored, uninterested and eventually unmotivated. I will still occasionally pull out a textbook every now and then, I do believe they have their purpose but only when I see a hole that needs to be filled. Although unit studies can be incorporated into high school, those years were a different story. The rest of the months and years of homeschooling were always filled with that same question, what do you want to learn about? Friends began asking me about the unit studies that I make for my kids. I would generously loan them one of my unit study bins full of printouts, notes, books, notebooks, games, and puzzles but they didn’t get very far, there was no plan because it was all stuck in my brain. They would look at my bin and think “where the heck do I begin, this paper or that, this art project or that book?” I had a skill, they had a need, but it had to make sense and have an easy to follow lesson plan. So, I began writing it out on my $300 laptop in Microsoft word. Over time I began developing fun and easy to use unit studies complete with a teacher manual. I am still learning and morphing my skills so I can create awesome curriculum for you and your kids! On my website you will find ideas, resources, forms and curriculum that I have gathered, created, and developed since I began teaching in 2004. My wish is that this website will inspire and help you to be creative, organized and confident so you can teach your children how amazing this world is that God created for us. We should be walking beside our children giving them a joy of learning, a love for exploring, and a passion for discovering. Doing this will enable them so they can use their gifts, skills and abilities to help others! “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms” 1 Peter 4:10
