I have A.S. in Business Management; B.S. in Elementary Education; M.S. in Reading, and have 22 years in elementary education while still loving my work. I have taught in the regular education classroom the majority of the time but, have specialized; 8 years teaching Gifted or talented, and another 11 years of experience working with E.S.O.L. students.
My experience has allowed me to individualize my instructional techniques and taught me that no two classrooms or individuals are the same. I utilize the Balanced Literacy Approach in my instructional guidelines. I have also worked in many different models including self contained, co-teaching and looping with my classroom.
The best reward I receive is when my students find success. I love to see them make new connections and get excited about learning. I have received many letters from parents about the changes in their student’s abilities or love of reading. However, I give God all the credit for the way He has used me in the classroom.
I first graduated with an A.S. in Business Management and was a manager of a grocery story for many years. I went back to school and received an A.A. in one year, then graduated with a Bachelor in Science K-6 Education to enter the teaching field at age 40 years. That day of entering the classroom was my first day that I truly enjoyed going to work. I was blessed to find a masters in reading program that allows me to use the new skills everyday. I learned to reflect on the ways to adapt for each student’s personal experience. I also try to be my authentic self, flaws and all, in front of the student so they can see, “The greater the understanding the more we can learn.”
I am blessed to have met my perfect match in life when I met my wife. I did not have to travel; she lived across the street for five years before we said our first hello. This year we will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. Together, we have raised our own children and are enjoying grand children. We share many common interests, are active in our church deaf ministry, and have two spoiled dogs.
