I have been an elementary Reading Specialist for 20 years. Prior to that, I taught kindergarten. In addition, I have served on my district's literacy curriculum team, helping to write curriculum and select resources that will help our students meet rigorous standards. I am an adjunct instructor for Northern Illinois University as well. I teach Master's-level courses to students seeking to earn their Reading Specialist license.
Readers construct their understanding of text when they learn to access different genres and text types through both explicit demonstration and ample opportunities to practice in authentic text. The teacher's job is to provide explicit instruction and notice what students are doing well, while also setting continuous goals for improvement.

When I'm not teaching children how to read, or teaching adults about literacy, I enjoy spending time with my family.
