I have taught music in primary schools for 34 years. I usually see all classes in a school – ages 3 – 11 years. I have experience in teaching violin and piano to individual pupils and I have taught groups for guitar, recorder and ukulele. I have trained and conducted a junior level orchestra. I also regularly coach choirs during my school visits. I have taught some secondary school level pupils and also lectured at University level.
I currently teach class groups – usually 20-33 pupils. Within any lesson I will usually teach some singing, tuned percussion, music appreciation and perhaps some movement to music. As well as class music I teach choirs, bands, guitars, recorders, ukuleles and also percussion groups.
In 2007 I was nominated for, and subsequently awarded a Corporate Recognising Achievement award for helping raise the profile of music participation in a local Primary School and for being an inspirational, dynamic and motivational teacher. In 2008 I was awarded the professional award of Chartered Teacher with particular mention being made of the high quality of my submission with clear evidence of enhanced practice and reflection. There were strong testimonials from my line manager about the influence I have upon pupils, colleagues, the school and the wider educational community.
I attended Primary and Secondary schools in Perth, Scotland and obtained my music teaching diploma from Northern College in Aberdeen. I spent two years teaching in the Orkney Islands and then moved to Aberdeen and I have been teaching in this area for the last 32 years. I have lectured at Aberdeen University and taught violin and orchestral skills at Aberdeen Music Centre.
For six years I have been the Editor of the SAME magazine – Scottish Association for Music Education. I am also a SAME committee member and as such I am involved in promoting music teaching nationally and working to provide appropriate in-service training and professional development for colleagues. I have written a book, "Games, Ideas and Activities for Primary Music" for Pearson Longman (available on Amazon!) as well as 25 song packs under the banner of Notable Songs Ltd. I play mainly piano on a weekly basis at Crown Terrace Baptist Church in Aberdeen.
