Creative Writing Teacher, Rebecca School New York City, NY June 2015–Present I run six poetry workshops with students with autism and other developmental disabilities ages 4–21. The lessons are self-created and planned across a full two semester academic year. The goal of the workshop is to use poetry as a means of enhancing self-advocacy and exploring self-expression. I also serve as a member of the crisis response team, an interdisciplinary group specially trained and certified in Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI). // Volunteer, New York Restoration Project New York City, NY June 2017–Present Volunteering my time in two community gardens maintained by the New York Restoration Project, I run poetry workshop for youth with disabilities in the neighborhoods the gardens serve. The programs are organized, planned, and ran by myself with funding and promotional support provided by the New York Restoration Project and their community partners. // PAW Poetry, New York Public Library- Hamilton Grange New York City, NY February 2018–March 2018 Volunteering my time, I ran poetry workshop for youth with disabilities in the children’s library of the Hamilton Grange branch of the New York Public Library. The program was organized, planned, and ran by myself with outreach and support provided by the New York Public Library.
My work is grounded in social-emotional learning and based on the belief that movement skills and literacy learning can go hand in hand. Movement help us understand rhythm, rhythm helps us understand poetry, and poetry helps us understand each other.
