TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 25 years' experience teaching English at secondary school level (Years 9-13, aka grades 8-12) in New Zealand. I have also worked as an Education Advisor (in Abu Dhabi) and designed and implemented professional learning programmes and appraisal systems for teachers. I have taught in a variety of other areas including ESOL, junior science and transition to work programmes. (And yes, this is how we spell 'programmes' in New Zealand!)

MY TEACHING STYLE

I enjoy a classroom full of 'professional fun', and strive to cater to individuals within the framework of what we are studying. Differentiation is a no-brainer to me. I like to hand over a carefully guided project and allow students to engage with it according to their own interests and abilities. I also like my students to be able to work at their own pace. Having said this, I'm a stickler for presentation and r better critical thinking - something that's becoming increasingly difficult as students obsess over quick-fire memes, videos and social media posts rather than literature for the longer haul! I love using technology to enhance learning.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I took a break from teaching as at 2019 to try my hand at following other interests, including writing tasks for New Zealand's Unit and Achievement standards which I sell on my own website - Drive Resources. I am now branching out into other resources but am finding that there is never enough time to create as much as I'd like - life is so busy! I wonder how I ever coped with a full teaching load! My aim is to create resources that are adaptable and that cater to the reality of what busy teachers need, rather than a romantic (unrealistic) ideal of what the job and student needs are.
