My career has involved teaching in rural and city locations at primary school, home-schooling, vocational education and training, and university levels. My levels of involvement have been as classroom teacher, department co-ordinator, subject co-ordinator, head teacher, district consultant, workshop trainer and lecturer.
I met my wife at High School, and her family were highly-experienced teachers and educators. I, and my family, had only been on the ‘receiving end’ of education. There were many occasions when my intended, and later actual, father-in-law (also a senior lecturer in Teachers’ Colleges) told me that teaching ‘just isn’t done that way’. I really appreciated his insights and the support he provided – with other Teachers’ College staff lining up to see what Robert Palmer was doing next. My students nicknamed me ‘the magic man’ - mainly because my focus was on each and every one of them rather than on a pre-set ‘curriculum’.
I was awarded the Australian Council For Private Education and Training Outstanding Teaching Initiative, and the United Nations Environment Programme recognized my Global Eco-Learning Sequential Development of Environmental Planning initiative. I have awards for promoting and teaching literacy and numeracy of community FM radio, for my regular involvements in television programs, and for my authoring of student activity books and training publications. My main rewards, however, have been about student achievements – as confident individuals with an increased desire to learn and to become safe, smart and successful in their chosen communities.
I hold a Trained Primary Teacher’s Certificate (2 years of full-time study) a Bachelor of Education, and numerous other Vocational Education and Training qualifications – including the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
