TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I earned my Reading Specialist Certificate and Masters Degree in Education with an emphasis in Reading and have almost 12 years of experience as an elementary teacher. I've taught full day Kinder, 1st, a 1/2 combo, and 2nd grade. I've spent a majority of my career teaching at a high-performing Title I school. I've also been a presenter for Professional Development classes on Literacy Workshop, Word Study, DIBELS, and Incorporating Technology into the Classroom.

MY TEACHING STYLE

After working at a low-performing Title I school and then transferring to a high-performing Title I school, I was able to compare different teaching practices that were occurring at the two schools. I’ve witnessed how standards-based instruction increases achievement, incorporated research-based instructional strategies to keep all students engaged and used frequent assessment to guide my instruction. I truly believe that all students are capable of learning and being successful, no matter what socioeconomic status they belong to or what language they speak. This proved evident as our school’s AYP gain over four years was among the top 1 percent in the state. It was the first school in the decades-long history of the Capistrano Unified School District to win the State of California’s Title I Academic Achievement Award. Under Dr. Chris Weber’s leadership, R.H. Dana also earned the first California Distinguished School Award in the school’s 42-year history and was also named a National Blue Ribbon School. We were able to achieve success due to excellent leadership that encouraged exceptional teaching practices that focused on the mastery of the standards while encouraging parent and community support. I work very hard to make sure that all of my students are successful by doing several things. First, I have strong classroom management. It is essential to set clear and high expectations so that students know what is expected of them. Next, I create standards-based lessons that incorporate technology, realia, and manipulatives so that my students are at grade-level and ready for the next grade. I also assess my students frequently to guide my instruction and check for mastery. Finally, I make sure that parents are involved in all aspects of their children’s education so that we can work together as a team.
