Students create a six-page assignment using a template for each character that has four descriptors to fill in. Some students really got into this assignment and treated it like a project, adding images and covers. While that might not be part of

Cool idea to take a popular online joke (the lists of shortest books ever written) and make it into an assignment. This one has students adjusting the capitalization of the books. You can also focus on underlining / italics.Mostly, it's just a fun

The basic idea is that your middle, high school, or college students are going to retell a classic work of literature that can be read by little kids. They have to research, think about audience, use images, and summarize in a way that is

I taught the short story twice with my non-creative writing students. The first year was wide open for the students. Almost none of them told a story, though, and I had to read the disasters. While other teachers dealt with the ineptitude by

While I never spent a whole lot of time on The Miracle Worker, my students were interested in Helen Keller, Anne Sullivan, and the rest of the characters. I usually showed them video of Helen Keller on Youtube, so be sure to find some clips. I

Design a brochure for a week-long vacation in the Ozarks. 60-points. 10 points per page. Students can use Powerpoint or Google Slides, or have the students design it old-school. Students could have some fun with the Hillbillie/Backwoods

Have you ever been told by someone who's not even in the classroom that students really need to have choices in what they read? And then you're like, "Great, but how do I grade them?" If the guru your district has hired can tell you, then use those

Students compare male and female dogs as presented by the book Where The Red Fern Grows. Then they write a paragraph. This is a simple use of textual evidence to argue a topic. It's not about reader opinion or how the students feel about dogs.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Twelve years teaching in a suburban district near Milwaukee.
Check out my own creative writing here My wife taught four years, as well. She taught more of the Advanced classes and less of the creative ones.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Use of technology in the classroom when useful. Taught several classes completely online. Emphasis on Cultural Literacy and background knowledge in order to understand literature and how to write, but also to connect with other classes. My wife was the typical martyr teacher who planned until 7pm on a Friday for the next week. Her lessons are organized and usable out of the box, whereas a teacher might have to step outside the box to see how cool my lessons can be.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

My honor was to have students published in my creative writing classes, students who otherwise disliked school or English class to succeed, and for students to tell me today that they remember lessons from over a decade ago. Many of the honors and awards from my past will do little to shape my future, but the fact that people like you are purchasing and using some of these lessons that took me hours upon hours of my own time to create is a great honor. Some of these units were important in the lives of students I was able to reach, and there's magic in a few of the assignments. I just hope that these downloads being here for you can make your life a little easier.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
