I only fully taught Hoop Dreams one time while teaching. I had used it as a substitute in Milwaukee Public Schools (if I did not receive lesson plans for the day). I knew the movie was special because it was a documentary that kept kids' attention

This assignment was not originally about Shakespeare. Even though it uses a Shakespeare quote, it's still not really about any of his plays. However, it is about the roles we all play in life. This means you could use it as an introductory

While this was once a paper, it migrated naturally into a report of sorts. I could see it being used in an English classroom discussing reputations or cliques, but it's probably just as well suited as an all-school assignment dealing with cliques or

This assignment seems like a simple editing project on the surface, but it's really a lot more important than that. Students look at current newspapers, websites, or TV news, and then decide what stories deserve to be the news. The download

I don't care if a bunch of professors in Ivory Towers want to tell you there is no canon in literature and that cultural literacy tests are biased and unnecessary. Assuming it's still true that the wealthy, cultured, privileged, and powerful in our

The amazing story is that the Indians, taking their $16 when they sold Manhattan, could have invested it and bought it back (today) with several hundred million dollars left over. The author makes a lot of assumptions. The worksheet questions some

If you are teaching a unit about nature or man versus nature, this is a good group activity for your class. I created ten scenarios that deal with nature, and students are to address each scenario in five different ways. Here's an example: "A

When beginning a novel, many ELA teachers will present photos or even items from that era. My students always thought my grandpas's 1930s magazines were really cool. However, what if we were to reverse the assignment and imagine a future or foreign

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Twelve years teaching in a suburban district near Milwaukee.
Check out my own creative writing here My wife taught four years, as well. She taught more of the Advanced classes and less of the creative ones.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Use of technology in the classroom when useful. Taught several classes completely online. Emphasis on Cultural Literacy and background knowledge in order to understand literature and how to write, but also to connect with other classes. My wife was the typical martyr teacher who planned until 7pm on a Friday for the next week. Her lessons are organized and usable out of the box, whereas a teacher might have to step outside the box to see how cool my lessons can be.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

My honor was to have students published in my creative writing classes, students who otherwise disliked school or English class to succeed, and for students to tell me today that they remember lessons from over a decade ago. Many of the honors and awards from my past will do little to shape my future, but the fact that people like you are purchasing and using some of these lessons that took me hours upon hours of my own time to create is a great honor. Some of these units were important in the lives of students I was able to reach, and there's magic in a few of the assignments. I just hope that these downloads being here for you can make your life a little easier.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

ME-- *French Immersion School - Milwaukee Public Schools ---*UW-Milwaukee - English Major, French Minor, Urban Planning Certificate ---*UW-Eau Claire - Teaching certification in MAT program WIFE -- Brookfield Academy ---UW-Eau Claire - Journalism ---Carroll College - English Teaching Cert.
