Eight years of progressive experience in reading and language arts in upper elementary instruction to meet the diverse needs of students in and out of the classroom. Areas of expertise include: building and fostering long-lasting relationships with students and their families; promoting student diversity; honoring multiple perspectives; implementing rigorous lessons that foster critical thinking aligned with Common Core Standards; competent and knowledgeable in standards based assessment and grading for ELA; assessing and utilizing data driven instruction; collaborating with grade-level, multi-district, and cross-curricular subject areas; teacher leader and mentor; gifted and effective communicator with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues; strong work ethic, and interpersonal skills; creating, developing, and overseeing student class and school community projects; sophisticated in the use of MyBigCampus, Canvas, JMC, Prezi, Google Drive and its components, and other sources of technology and social media based instructional tools for the classroom.
I have a unique teaching style that incorporates the greats like Ron Clark, Dr. Steve Perry, Rick Wormeli, Fred Gilliland (my high school teacher), Trent Reedy (a fellow teacher and author), as well as my own style that is research based, student friendly, rooted, willing to accept and move with the changes in education that include technology and teaching students that will have jobs that do not yet exist. I'm passionate about teaching, kids, ELA, technology, and the CCSS! I'm a balanced mixture of strict and fun.
I spoke at the Iowa Reading Conference in June 2013 on building relationships with students. I have been asked to speak publicly on standards based grading and assessment that I use as a beta program in year two at my AEA. I was Teacher of the Month in February 2008.
I graduated early from high school, went onto community college, then university where I ended up working for two years before going back to school to be a teacher. In the meantime, I was a dental assistant for seven years. I graduated from William Penn University with an Elementary Education B.A. with endorsements in Reading and ESL. I have taught 6th grade ELA for eight years, 5th grade reading for three years, 6th grade computers and geography for two, and 6th grade health for one year.
