TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught students with disabilities, including students with ID and ASD, in inclusive and self-contained settings.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I chose to become an educator because I wanted to make a difference in our classrooms. As a child, my school experiences were relatively uninspiring and I knew that there must have been a better way to engage our students. Throughout the course of my professional preparation I learned that not only was there a more effective way to reach students, but there was also a way to encourage them to want to become learners for life. Furthermore, I also learned that these opportunities for lifelong learning do not need to be limited for students with disabilities. I believe direct/explicit instruction and inquiry-based instruction do not have to be mutually exclusive; we can teach our students with disabilities to be curious, actively engaged, and to reflect while meeting their needs and making the general education curriculum accessible to them through explicit instruction. I also believe education should be fun and there is no better way to foster enjoyment through learning than by modeling ones own enthusiasm as a teacher!
