TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Special Education Teacher for Metro Nashville Public School: 2001-Present Educational Consultant/Tutor for The Learning Lab of Brentwood (Brentwood Tennessee): 2005-Present

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am a big fan of meta-cognition. I believe that students learn best when the learning process is active and not passive.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Teacher of the Year: 2009

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

1996: Graduated from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University (Double major: Educational Studies/History) 2001: Received Master's Degree from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Special Education

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

When working with children with a certain phonetic skill level, both elementary age and older special education students that struggle with reading, it was very difficult to find supplementary reading materials that they could actually read. Moreover, a lot of reading materials with a phonetic concentration had very little focus on reading comprehension. Thus, I felt that reading was taught in a passive manner. Since I am a firm believer that children should be taught active reading techniques, I decided to write children's books that not only had a phonetic focus, but also a reading comprehension focus. I've included not only phonics instruction, but also pre-reading and comprehension instruction. My goal in the next 12 months is to have a story written for every phonetic skill (i.e. CVC, Digraphs, Welded sounds, etc). With that said, I hope that you enjoy my stories.
