I taught first grade for 3 years and fourth grade for one year in Texas. Then I moved to Taiwan where I've been teaching ESL to middle school and high school students for 6 years. I've also had experience teaching adult classes.
I believe children are at the heart of teaching. As students, they need to be immersed in subject matter and activities that are relevant and meaningful to their lives. Learning is not a passive process that takes place with the teacher up front and the students at their desks. As teachers, we help children engage in thinking and learning on their own. We aid in self-initiated discoveries by challenging them and asking higher-level questions. They need to be active learners and participants. However, it is the teacher that sets the tone for learning and achievement. If the teacher is enthusiastic, professionally dressed, and well-prepared, the children will respond accordingly.
