I have many years of experience teaching ELA as well as practicing my craft, including: * Seven years teaching in middle schools * long-term assignments in high schools * instructing in college as an adjunct * authoring a book * writing award-winning pieces as a journalist * creating content for 40 + websites
My teaching style includes anything that will engage students, moving them forward as critical thinkers and global citizens. I aim to connect their learning to other disciplines and to the larger world. The formats I use include * Socratic Seminar - Popcorn and Fishbowl models, student-led and anchored with leveled questions; * Inquiry-based learning; * Stations, including technology (Kahoot!, Schoology, Videos), discussions, manipulatives, acting, drawing and diagramming, writing, charades; * Interactive Notebooks; * Minilesson and Writing Workshop formats based on Lucy Calkins Units of Study; * Fiction and Nonfiction Signposts (from Notice & Note Strategies for Close Reading by Kylene De Beers and Robert Probst); * Anchor Charts; * Jigsaws; * Graphic Organizers; * Writing Portfolios; * Think-Pair-Share and small group discussions.
