TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Currently I teach 5th grade in the dual language program (students learn every subject in English and Spanish) and I am the English-speaking side. I taught high school 9th/10th grade Spanish, levels 1, 2, and 5 AP Literature and Culture. Also, I have worked summers in programs for the school district as a counselor for ESL students.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I was very fortunate to have a supportive administration that allowed me to implement innovative ideas. Since our state and national standards are emphasizing communication skills in the target language, I piloted a Spanish immersion program starting in level 1 day one. This means that I taught in Spanish from the first moment about 95% of the time. However, I did NOT use the "sink or swim" method, but scaffolded my lessons and activities with lots of comprehensible input with linguistic support strategies. My goal was for my students to feel confident in their abilities to speak, read, write, and understand Spanish and be able to apply their knowledge. It is not that grammar concepts took a back seat, but grammar and vocabulary were treated very differently from the traditional sense. I believe in giving students real life context to learn meaning instead of rote memorization of material. Students weren't perfect at the language (that comes with years of practice), but it was amazing to hear their ability and love for the language. Overall, I always want my students to have an engaging learning experience that remains with them forever.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I published for the first time this past spring 2015 in the Texas Foreign Language Association (TFLA) online journal. My article is "From Traditional to Comprehensible", which you can read online. Also, I was a finalist in my district's "First Year Teacher of the Year".
