TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've spent 12 years teaching in Texas public schools. The first 10 years were spend in various special education classrooms and the last 2 years I have spent teaching 5th grade Language Arts.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Spending 10 years teaching Special Education taught me to be self-sufficient. Classes like the ones I have taught are typically made up of a mix of different ability levels and the teacher is tasked with advancing all of the students to grade level mastery. To add to that challenge, we do this with little or limited resources. I have found that many of the pre-made books are too visually busy or have an appearance that appeals more to younger children and may be inappropriate to use with older children who are learning the skills at a later developmental age. Due to this, I have created many of my own resources over the years that teach the higher level skills in a way that is straightforward and is not limited to one age group. As I started teaching in a general education classroom, I enjoyed the challenge of designing lessons and materials to fit the needs of advanced learners. I have kept my "no-frills" teaching style and have found many students are willing to take on challenges they have not previously tried due to lack of confidence.
