I have been teaching in Texas schools for 15 years. I taught 7th grade language arts for four years, and have been teaching high school English for the last 11. In addition to English, I have a degree in History and love to incorporate that into my lessons. This year I'm also teaching and creating materials for a Practical Writing class which reviews basic skills needed for the state exams.
I have a mixed teaching style, but most of my lessons are highly student-centered. I believe in a mixture of types of lessons--some independent work, some group work, some partner work, and some direct teaching.
My first year teaching I won the Rookie of the Year award, and since then I've been teacher of the year four times, most recently last year. I'm the English Department Chair at our high school currently.
I attended Texas public schools from kindergarten through graduation. In high school, I attended a magnet program for math and science. After high school, I attended and graduated from the University of Texas with honors in English and a dual-major in History. I then worked on a Masters degree in Literature from Texas State, but stopped that work when I started teaching.
Since I started teaching I have been creating my own materials. I find that the specific needs of my students can't always be met with the textbook. I have shared my work with other teachers for years, and have always received great feedback. I've had teachers from other parts of the country find materials on my teacher website and ask to use them as well. I'm happy to help other teachers find useful materials that may help students across the country.
