I have been teaching high school Spanish for more than 10 years. During that time I learned that one of the best teaching methods is to actively engage your students into the lesson. Many times the books students are issued lack the ability for teachers to get their students to pay attention to what is being taught. Therefore I created a set of Powerpoint presentations that can be used for each and every Spanish lesson. Nowadays most schools give students an email account. Therefore the teacher can email the powerpoints to students ahead of class time and then work on them as a group/class throughout the day with the use of an LCD projector. My students enjoyed being able to get out of their seats, participate as a group, & play the games involved in many of the powerpoints. The use of these powerpoints prevent having to write all over the board for each and every class and they can be used year after year! Finally, parents loved the idea that these powerpoints can be emailed to the students ahead of time so that they will know what the upcoming lesson will be.
I believe that the best way to help a student learn a foreign language is to continually encourage them. Find one trait that they're good at and continually enforce it. This allows the student to realize that they can succeed and won't give up after one unsuccessful attempt. Engaging the entire class as a group is one of the best ways to get everyone involved. Finally, every foreign language teacher knows that learning a new language is like learning Math. Each and every knew thing you learn is based upon what you already know. Therefore set up a list of objectives and allow your students to see how much they've accomplished by years end. Your students will be amazed at how far they've come from the beginning of the year.
