I've taught for nine years, mostly in first grade and I love it to pieces! I have also taught at a summer enrichment program for middle school students - Aim High. I was one of the founding directors of Aim High (Marin City location), in the San Francisco Bay area of California. I have also been the Director of SCORE! Learning Center (private computer based tutoring), taught Adult ESL as a volunteer in a Latino community outside of San Francisco, and worked with an education non-profit to research effective data systems in CA school districts. Moreover, I completed my doctoral dissertation entitled: Perceptions of Bilingualism and Home Language Maintenance and Loss: A Study of Latino Parents at a San Francisco Bay Area Elementary Charter School.
I've come to realize why a “one-size-fits-all” approach to teaching and learning never works! I strive to engage students with curriculum and projects that challenge students to take risks. I believe that students are not vessels waiting to be passively filled with facts. Rather, students have much to learn and experience, but also much to teach one another. Most importantly, I take a human rights approach to teaching character education by emphasizing our basic rights and responsibilities: creating a culture of respect, acceptance, and authentic caring is just as important as developing our intellects!
