I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in grade school. It has always been my passion to help others learn and learn well. I attended a small all-women school in Notre Dame, IN called Saint Mary's College. The education classes at Saint Mary’s College prepared me to work with a diverse population of students. Since graduating, I have worked at a small charter school. I was the lead teacher in a self-contained classroom for students with low-functioning autism. We worked on both functional and academic goals and those students taught me an abundance of knowledge on how to frame lessons to fit all types of needs. I was a learning resource specialist for a year in a public school where I created lesson plans for Math and Reading for students in grades Kindergarten through fifth. I worked with students in a one-on-one capacity, small group setting (4 to 5 students), and large group atmosphere (up to 20 students). I now work at a private school in Minnesota called Groves Academy. It's a school that is designed to help students with learning disabilities and attention difficulties. I have a third/fourth grade split and the average class size is 8 students. I feel incredibly blessed each day that I get to work with such AMAZING students. I can't wait to see where my journey will take me! :)
Generally, one method does not work universally. Therefore, I find it imperative to vary instruction to appeal to the particular learning style of the student. Whether a student learns best auditorally, visually, kinesthetically, or logically, I feel that I am able to convey meaning to him or her. I enjoy learning along with my students and I find it a joy to help students reach their fullest potential.
