Engine-Uity is the brainchild of three teachers -- Pat, Mary, and Nancy -- who come from different parts of the country and have different teaching backgrounds. Nancy, Engine-Uity's Primary Specialist, is from Nebraska. She's taught grades K-6 and has administrative certification and experience. Her ideal classroom would be at the little kids' end of the hall. Pat grew up and began her teaching career on Long Island, New York. Although she's taught most grades at one time or another, her longest experience is with Intermediate and Middle School. Mary, who is from California, earned K-8 certification, but found herself teaching English to gifted high school students -- and loving it!
Early in our careers, we discovered that the everybody-on-the-same-page approach to educating children didn't suit our teaching styles or provide the best learning experiences for most of our students. Before "differentiating" became an educational buzzword, we all found ourselves drawn to working with gifted kids; our styles -- suiting instruction to individuals -- met their needs. As Engine-Uity, we each create materials for our grade levels but we also work together from time to time -- Primary and Secondary; Secondary and Intermediate; Primary and Intermediate and Secondary. This cooperative situation gives our materials a depth and perspective that isn't easy to achieve when working only with others at the same grade level(s).
We've received the Recognition of Achievement Award from the California Association for Gifted, as well as a couple of Teacher of the Year awards voted by students. However, the most rewarding to us are the comments we receive from teachers who've used Engine-Uity materials. To hear that what we create makes a positive difference to students and teachers is the greatest honor of all.
