I started my first English school in central London in 1992 which became British Council accredited just two years after opening (20 years ago!). I then founded English Out There in 2001. At the start I taught, then went into marketing and then back into course development and teaching. I run an ESL summer school in London that doesn't use classrooms and gets amazing results and feedback. A lot of my own teaching is now online using Skype and social media platforms like Facebook and Edmodo.com.
The English Out There materials take learners through some specific language that enables them to then have a conversation using the language (scaffolding). Students then speak to three or four fluent English speakers using the language from the lesson. There are some simple processes that can be utilised to dramatically improve confidence and fluency in even the most blocked English speakers. The results can be startling. You can listen to lots of real case studies on my podcast at http://languagesoutthere.podomatic.com
Top 10 practice in the European Union for teaching English using social interaction and social media (2011), British Council ELTONs Innovation Awards (shortlisted 2004, which was pre-publication of the materials).
BA (Hons) History. I probably hold the world record for getting a beginner English speaker up three levels to a comfortable intermediate....6 lessons! Listen to my podcast :-) I constantly read, experiment and publish.
Born near London, grew up near Liverpool, went to a Welsh university before living in Australia and then traveling the world with my ELT businesses. I believe English teaching is due to enter a new paradigm where 21st century technological tools provide the ability to dramatically speed up the process of natural language acquisition.
