I volunteered in an adult ESL classroom for four years and fell in love with it! I decided to go back to school to get my Master's so that I could teach full-time. I am now in my fourth year of teaching English as a Second Language to adult immigrants of all different first language backgrounds in a Community Education program. I currently am teaching a high beginning level ESL class, but I have also taught both intermediate and advanced English courses.
My adult English students often come to school exhausted from very complex lives outside of the classroom. In order to keep my students engaged, I have to tune in to my creative side :) I always strive to make my lessons interactive in order to push students from being passive learners to active participants in their language learning! I center my teaching on life skills English topics that integrate grammar, spelling, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, writing, listening and speaking.
"Thesis of the Year" award in Hamline University's School of Education program (second place); special presenter for the University of Minnesota's senior seminar session in the Department of Spanish Studies; "Spanish Student of the Year" award at Inver Hills Community College; recognized by my university professors as an outstanding writer in English and Spanish.
I have a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults from Hamline University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish Studies from the University of Minnesota.
I am fluent in Spanish. I have a passion for helping others! I believe education is empowering and I want to see my students achieve their dreams through education. In addition to my passion for teaching, the three most important things to me are my faith, family and friends and of course my adorable dogs! I also have a passion for decoration and design. In the near future, I hope to get involved with an ESL outreach ministry at my church in addition to my teaching through the school district. I hope to add some faith-based ESL resources to my store in the future! So...keep checking back :) While many things in my store were created with my adult learners in mind, I do have things that work for elementary, middle and high school ELL's.
