This is my 7th year teaching. All seven have been in special education-- 6 years in pre-school, and currently in a pre-k/K/1st classroom. The last 5 of my 7 years have been spent teaching students with autism and other severe disabilities.
Differentiated instruction is incredibly important for the little guys I work with. Each one is essentially at a different skill level. I utilize picture prompts and supports, task systems, visual schedules, one on one discrete trials, etc.
