This is my second year teaching. The journey has only just begun, but yet I feel I have learned a vast amount already! One thing I have learned during this time is just how much I enjoy creating original materials for my classroom. And I'd love the chance to share some of those materials with you!
My joy as a teacher is when I get to watch my students think critically. I think of myself as an facilitator of learning, not just an arbiter of information. I want my students to discover knowledge themselves, with me simply serving as a guide. I never miss an opportunity to incorporate creativity into the classroom. I believe students learn best when they get to interpret and portray new knowledge in their own unique way!
I have a shining teacher moment almost every day! When a student remarks that diagramming sentences is "fun" or I hear an "oooohh, I get it," I feel like I've won an Acadmey Award!
I completed by B.A. in English, with a concentration in creative writing, at Louisiana State University, graduating with a 3.67 GPA. After college, in order to help make ends meet, I started substitute teaching and realized how at home I felt in the classroom. I completed an alternative certification program called Teach Baton Rouge, and am now immensely proud to be working as an English teacher at Baton Rouge Magnet High School, one of the top performing schools in the state of Louisiana!
I'm recently engaged and getting married in June 2013. My fiance is currently in the process of obtaining his teacher certification as well! My mother (also a teacher) and I have been singing the praises of TPT to him, and what a help he will find it starting out as a first year teacher. I love to read (of course), watch good movies, critique bad movies, play with my dog, discuss politics with my fiance, draw (even though I'm no good!), and go for long walks!
