TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am currently in my 8th year teaching high school Spanish and spent two years at the university level as well. I have taught the entire spectrum of grade levels and achievement ranges. I just completed my 5th year teaching AP Spanish. 99% of my students in the last 3 years have achieved a 3 or higher on the AP exam.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I teach based on the idea of "los puntos clave". The theory behind “los puntos clave” and a communicative approach to teaching a language at any level is: Attaining new levels of proficiency at any language level should be characterized by three main factors: (1) an expanded vocabulary, (2) increased grammatical accuracy when speaking, and (3) longer levels of written discourse. Instead of providing grammar-centered review, we define seven major communicative functions of the language and then focus on the key grammatical structures that are needed to perform these functions. Learning grammatical structures and rules is different from acquiring the ability to use those structures and rules in real-world situations. The same seven communicative functions must continually resurface and be reemphasized at every level though the vocabulary, themes, and cultural content of each course may vary. Hence, los puntos clave.
