Before choosing to homeschool my children, I was an Elementary School Counselor for ten years. Fifty percent of my time was spent in the classroom teaching Social-Emotional Learning to students in grades 4K–6th grade. Prior to becoming an Elementary School Counselor, I was an Outdoor Education Teacher. Now I spend my days at museums, zoos, parks, and in our homeschool room teaching my own kids and creating kids crafts and activities for my website, Fireflies and Mud Pies.
I believe learning can and should be creative, engaging, and fun. When I worked as an Elementary School Counselor, I frequently used arts and crafts in the classroom, in small groups, and during individual counseling sessions. Kids love the opportunity to create! Arts and crafts activities boast many positive benefits for kids. Not only do they feed creativity and give kids a chance to express themselves, but they also develop fine-motor and visual-motor skills, improve focus and executive functioning, and boost visual processing abilities.
