I have been teaching since 2004. I have taught grades 1 and 3, but mostly I have taught first grade.
As a first grade teacher, I strive for balance in everything that I teach. I do not believe that classrooms should be mostly whole language or mostly focused on systematic reading strategies. Because there are many different learners, there must be a balance of both sides. An author that I strongly encourage teachers to read is Louisa Moats. She explains the importance of the balance between both sides of teaching reading.
