I have taught high school & middle school music and science for 15 years. Music and science?! I know, I know. I truly believe science is music and music is science. My love is middle school beginning band and the high school sciences such as Biology, Environmental Science and Marine Science. But I have taught the scope of anything music and everything science.
I want my students to know that my classroom is bigger than the walls the surround it. I love traditional teaching as much as I love non-traditional. I believe there is a place for both to be married together in a great learning environment. I share educational ideas with the Montessori system such as the multi-age classroom, I share educational ideas with the Waldorf system, such as emphasizing the importance of nature and the arts. I also believe that technology, when applied intelligently, is an important learning tool and can greatly enhance education. I believe in a strongly child-centered, nature and art-based school where students learn respect for each other, their community, and the world. It is a place where the joy of childhood and the joy of learning fill every day. I have spent the last several years developing classes that offer a rigorous interdisciplinary education emphasizing student-driven, project-based thematic curricular units. Promote the meaningful integration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics with art and design, giving science and music an essential and generative place in the curriculum. Students collaborate on projects that foster flexible thinking, problem solving, and the integration of individual and group efforts. I support young students in their joyful exploration of the natural world by providing rich and diverse lessons highlighting the inter-connectivity of academic subjects. I believe we must emphasize the qualities that enable discovery: careful observation, creativity, and methods of experimental design.
