I've been an elementary school teacher for 20 years. I taught part-time for a decade while caring for my own two girls, who are currently in grades 7 and 9. I am the only fourth grade teacher in town in a very small school, so I always have a split, whether it's a 3/4 or a 4/5. My students are always awesome, so this is the best job in the world.
I incorporate story in most aspects of my teaching, whether I'm telling a story, creating one with the kids, or just using one to put math or social studies concepts into context for my students. I don't like to be the center of attention, though -- I like to keep my students' hands and minds busy so they can take control of their own learning!
I graduated from UVIC with distinction on my Bachelor of Education degree specializing in Language Arts and reading intervention. All of my observation reports in the last decade, done by administrators from different districts, have scored perfect marks, but who cares? My reward is watching kids who feel defeated by school suddenly understand that they can do what they didn't think they could.

I spent one wonderful year homeschooling my girls when my oldest was in grade one. That was one of the best years of my life, and both my girls were reading chapter books before they entered kindergarten -- not because they're gifted, but because reading is easy when you break it down, and it's GREAT FUN!! Now, years later, they both pick up a book and lose themselves whenever they have a few minutes of free time.
