I have been a teacher for 9 years. For the first 3 years of my teaching career, I taught at an inner-city school. There I taught 4th grade for 2 years, then I taught a 4th/5th split for 1 year. I wanted to be closer to home so I took a position as a 2nd grade teacher at a small rural school in my community. I have been teaching 2nd grade for the past 6 years. I love teaching 2nd grade!! It's so rewarding watching my students grow into fluent readers who love to read with expression.
Every student is unique, therefore, each student learns differently. In my classroom, I do my best to reach all of my students. I am a visual learner so I always use a Power Point or other visual aide so students can visualize what is being taught. I cannot stand for my classroom to be quiet or for students to be sitting in their seats for the entire day. I know I have difficulty sitting still so I do not expect my students to be able to sit quietly for 8 hours. Often times, my students will act out their vocabulary words or move around the room to solve math problems. Those are just a few activities we use in my class. I also use a lot of teamwork in my class. Students have the chance to review or practice new material by working within their groups. Sometimes students have the ability to teach their peers a specific material in a way that I may not. With this classroom management style, students also are rewarded for their behavior, being responsible, and for their academics success. Students earn points for their team for having their materials, a positive attitude, hard work, and cooperation. Teams are rewarded weekly and monthly for having the most points. At the end of the nine weeks, each member in the group with the most points are given a big reward. (tickets to a minor league ballgame, a gift card, a small prize, etc) I have found that this classroom management technique promotes hard work, cooperation, and positive attitudes. Students want to work hard so their group can succeed. It's amazing watching the students working to reach a common goal and succeed!

I graduated from West Virginia State University in 2005 with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. I will soon begin working towards my Masters in Education Administration. One day I would like to become a elementary school principal. However, I don't think I am ready to leave the classroom for at least a few more years.
