MY TEACHING STYLE

The theme of deconstructing and eliminating domination is found not only within intersectional feminist pedagogy, but also in engaged (hooks, 1994), reality (Emdin, 2012), and constructivist pedagogies (Gnezda, 2009). School systems utilizing a Democratic Citizenship Education (Davis, Sumara, & Luce-Kapler, 2015) advance the forenamed pedagogies’ abilities by disabling all curricula that allows for the perpetuation of privileged beliefs of dominant cultures. Sanctioning for the presence of ethics in classrooms administered through effective lesson plans and curriculum is a powerful tool in the dismantlement of oppressive forces found in all aspects of our students’ lives (Davis, Sumara, & Luce-Kapler, 2015). bell hooks (1994) emphasized the practicality of using feminist and engaged pedagogies (Freire, 1972) by pointing out that our ability to provoke excitement in the classroom is what allows ourselves and our students to have genuine interests and investments with one another, allowing for voices in the classroom to be heard. An engaged pedagogy is the ability for a teacher-student relationship to exist interchangeably between one another as equals. It is also crucial that learning must provoke emotion and excitement and it is our job as the facilitators to enable this exchange and form of expression in a safe and supportive environment (hooks, 1994).
