I have been teaching for eleven plus years, first in Maine's capital city of Augusta, and now in the small, rural community in which I live. All but one of those years have been in fifth grade.
I am a firm believer in spending a lot of time and energy establishing routines, procedures, and culture in my classroom, so that, with that structure, students can eventually guide more of their own learning. I try to run a classroom in which students have a lot of voice and move at their own paces, with sufficient time to reflect on and set goals for their own learning.
