I have worked in Special education for 9 years as an aide and a teacher. I began doing respite and working in a non-public school for students with severe autism. I have worked in public and private schools and with grade levels K-9. Currently I run a county K-6 Severely Handicapped classroom in the Sacramento Area. I am lucky to use Unique learning systems curriculum with my students which is a fantastic resource for more significant academic needs. We use MOVE curriculum and do a lot of positioning, toileting, data tracking and sensory fun!
Although I have experience with ABA, TEACCH, PECS, and direct instruction, I tend to teach with a combination of structure and play, mixing fun, sensory play, movement, and frequent breaks with daily schedule structure, IEP goal and curriculum work time and specific morning and circle routines.
