TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a Graduate Teacher - currently teaching middle school Geography, History, HPE and English. I completed 3 University placements in schools of various cohorts. I have also spent some time as a special needs SSO and have a particular interest in inclusive class room practice and differentiation.

MY TEACHING STYLE

"Fair isn't everyone getting the same thing, fair is everyone getting what they need to be successful" I’m an avid supporter of the incorporation and use of numerous pedagogical approaches for the varying needs of students in today’s classrooms. Students should be actively involved in their learning, where opportunities to negotiate the curriculum are encouraged, and be producers of knowledge, rather than consumers. I aim to be a facilitator of knowledge, where students are able to develop the necessary skills in order to be self-motivated, intrinsic and innovated learners. This I believe is most effective with the inquiry based learning approach, where I will emphasise the importance of the process, more so than the final result. I value a sociocultural perspective of education and the learning that comes from interaction and collaboration in the classroom. I also take influence from the humanistic approach and believe that a combination of these two frameworks generates a realistic learning experience where students understand how ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status and culture can influence an individual, yet take responsibility for their actions and choices they make. I believe every child is a unique individual who learns in a different style and at a different rate than his or her peers. As teachers, it is our job to respect this by differentiating through content, process, product and environment. In order to do this effectively, the students need to understand that everyone has different needs and that not everyone will be treated fairly, rather than equally. I believe in using a variety of teaching strategies and tools to encourage student engagement and cater for the diverse learning styles. As an educator in the digital age, it’s important that Information Communication Technology (ICT) is intrinsic to my teaching practice. In relation to students and learning, I believe that learner oriented teaching promotes knowledge that is both purposeful and enduring. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to know who my learners are, what kinds of knowledge and experience they bring to the class, and what they want to achieve so that I can tailor a curriculum that fits their needs whilst following the appropriate curriculum. By assessing where my learners are with respect to mutual learning goals, I can provide the scaffolding they need to build connections between what they already know and the new understandings they seek to create.
