TEACHING EXPERIENCE

We are musical sisters and educators! ~*~Alison: I have a background in elementary education, music, and the fine arts. As a child my father taught me how to play guitar and piano by ear. In college I began as a Theater Design major, but soon switched to Vocal Jazz Performance when I found myself immersed in the jazz community on campus. After college, I moved to Chicago and began performing throughout the city with my band and as a solo jazz artist. After a few years, I went back to school to get my Masters in Elementary Education. I went on to teach fifth grade and also taught science, coding, and language arts classes for gifted children. Currently, I teach piano and art classes and provide tutoring through my community library. I also run a separate TPT shop focusing on creating clipart. ~*~Natalie: I have over ten years of teaching and performance experience, having cut my teeth in New York City and finally settling back in my home town of Chicago. I have worked with students from K-12 in a variety of settings including high school choral conducting, elementary general music, children and adults with special needs, and early childhood education. I currently teach classes in early childhood music, 2-4th grade piano classes, as well as run my own private lesson studio serving 20+ students per week in piano, voice, and guitar.~*~

MY TEACHING STYLE

~*~Alison: I believe in creating a nurturing and accepting classroom community. I believe that establishing high expectations and being consistent with my students about those expectations shows them that I care and want the best for them. I think that inquisition and higher order thinking are the keys to learning. My favorite subject to teach is reading. I feel such pride knowing a child can read because of me. ~*~Natalie: I love to tap into the creativity of my students, and believe very strongly in creating a student-centered learning experience for my students. I strive to challenge my students with rigorous standards, while also instilling a joy and passion for music and learning in general. My classroom is a place where students can feel safe to make mistakes, explore creatively, and develop critical thinking skills.~*~
