Taught English First Language, Literature, Foreign Language, ESL to students in various parts of Southern Africa . Often we have had no access to textbooks, and relied on basic material to 'get the messageexamination across'. Curricula include Cambridge International Examinations, State Examination Boards and Independent Authorities.
Various methods have been used - Outcomes based styles, learning by rote in remote areas, on-line teaching , one on one, and groupwork. Student self-discovery using prompts os often most successful.
Letters of thanks count more - sometimes twenty years after the student has been in my classroom.
Educated at two schools in the then-Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Wrote Cambridge public exams - 'O' level and 'A' levels - English, History and Geography. Top Government Scholarship to study Education and Law at Univeristy of Natal, Durban. BA degree and post-graduate teaching Diploma. Later acquired Accounting qualification (private college).
Married 40 years with two children. Widowed in 2009. Devoted time since to teaching foreign immigrants and refugees to South Africa, as well as homeschoolers and students at CIE college.
