MY TEACHING STYLE

As a magician and educator, I love the idea of teaching kids using magic. Certain tricks rely on mathematical principles which can really help kids learn. As a geek myself, I also love superheroes, puzzles and games. So why not combine all my interests together? Over the years other teachers have commented about my lessons and resources asking me where I get my ideas from. All of these have been highly engaging and thoroughly enjoyed by my students. Most of these were simply designed and made by me and were unavailable for purchase, until now. The general idea of Geek Educational is to make these resources available to other teachers for a reasonable price, hopefully saving teachers a lot of time in making their own. These will are all highly engaging educational resources that will be centred around puzzles, games, magic and general geekery. Geekery being defined as comics, sci-fi, games, cartoons, superheroes and other topics students find interesting and adding an educational twist on them. How are these products different to other resources available? I can only share my experiences. In my first year of teaching, I taught my class a magic trick which utilized a math based principle. During lunch time, I observed the majority of my students attempting to perform this trick to other students around the school, including the older kids. Not only is this is empowering experience and boosting self confidence for the quite students, but they were practicing maths. This was done in their own time! Instead of playing games, they were essentially practicing maths instead! Many of these students hated maths in any other context and here they are practicing maths during lunch time. That’s the real magic right there. This is what teaching is about. Visit www.geekeducational.com
