This activity was born when I suddenly had the realization that English Language Learners have likely never been exposed to basic English phonics. If they are coming from a first language that has clearly defined vowel phonetics (like Spanish), then

I think phrasal verbs are necessary for English language fluency. That said - they are both difficult to teach and to learn. Many teachers opt for introducing phrasal verbs in a laundry list style of putting the main verb with a slew of prepositions

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught English as a Second Language for two years. I have taught Business English and Early Learners, but my primary focus is in Conversational English - a missing component in most schools that have very large classrooms and not enough time to get the students talking!!

MY TEACHING STYLE

As I am primarily working in Conversational English, I create materials that help get students talking. I like to play games - even those that do not require a lot of speaking for participation - because the act of playing encourages communication between the competitors! This seems true for younger and older learners alike! I also create materials that are specifically geared to enhance fluency. Many students have a high level of English and pass the top examinations but are still a little lost when it comes to English spoken on-the-ground ... so phrasal verbs, slang, and even puns can easily creep into my classroom.
