This is my 18th year teaching. I have taught 10 years in kindergarten, 1 year as a k/1 combo, and 6 years in first grade. My first 17 years I taught at a school of high poverty with 91% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. 70% of our students, English is their second language. During this time, I have been the Student Council advisor for 13 years. I have shared a classroom with another teacher part-time and was a part-time Thinking Maps trainer and coach. This year I have moved schools and grade level, I am teaching 4th grade at a school with 62% poverty and 27% are learning English Learners.
I LOVE GLAD strategies, although our district has turned away from GLAD, I currently incorporate and use the strategies daily. I was a GLAD trainer, but allowed my certification to expire. I also love to infuse GATE icons and frames into my teaching. I have been or currently am a district GLAD trainer, FOSS Science kit trainer, and Thinking Maps trainer. I am also trained in Latino Literacy, a program that teaches parents how to incorporate reading in the home. I served on the UCI California Reading and Literature Project for several years. I am currently on my distict's team of teachers to lead other teachers into teaching with Common Core Standards, Instructional Guidance Team.
I have received the Honorary Service Award from our PTA twice. I have been nominated as teacher of the year twice.
