TEACHING EXPERIENCE

- Taught students with multiple handicaps in a New York City self-contained high school. - Wrote grants and won approximately $20,000,000 for New York City school districts. - Taught educators to write grants in workshops and with print & online resources. Have a look at my video: Grant writing to build capacity: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaHDZoXH1oY - Worked as a consultant for Sylvan Learning Centers as a parent advisor and later as a reading tutor - Teach special programs in a public alternative school-- focusing on reading and critical thinking skills needed for global success

MY TEACHING STYLE

- Meet students where they are. - Use high interest materials as a vehicle for promoting comprehension and building vocabulary in struggling student populations. - Vary evidence-based interventions according to class composition

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I was Teacher of the Year at my high school for the 2011-2012 school year. I was also honored at the White House in the late 1990s (along with my school superintendent) for being among the first round of winners of the Federal Community Learning Centers Grant.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I hold a BA from Hofstra University and an MA from New York University in English/Creative Writing, and I received 36 credits in general and special education to earn certification as a high school English teacher and as a special programs teacher.
