I have worked in a small rural K-12 school for 7 years. I spent my first 2 years in middle school special education and the past 5 years in middle and high school English, teaching mainly 9th and 10th grades, with some deviations over the years. I have taught both regular English courses and smaller, remediation lab-type classes. I also teach a dance elective course open to students in grades 7-12. Recently I have added some special education, elementary self-contained English/reading to my schedule.
I am a firm believer in the importance of the arts in education. I'm very lucky to be able to share that directly in my dance elective, but I also incorporate the visual, music, and movement-based arts in my English classes whenever possible. My goal is to create thinkers and problem-solvers, rather than skilled test-takers, and I have watched arts-based education further that end.
I hold NYS teaching certificates in the following areas: English 7-12, Students with Disabilities--English 7-12, Childhood Education 1-6, Students with Disabilities 1-6, Dance K-12 I've also published educational editorials in New York newspapers in Syracuse, Ithaca, Binghamton, and Elmira and have had a letter to the editor appear in American Educator.
