By Growing Grade by Grade I taught full-time for 22 years and 4 years as a tutor, math coach, and substitute before retiring. I began teaching 6th grade, both self-contained and departmentalized ELA, found my niche in 5th-grade general education, and found my joy in 5th-grade math/science! I've mentored new and experienced educators and helped roll out the Common Core Curriculum for my district.
I believe that "children must hold math in their hands before they can hold it in their heads". I strive to maintain a needs-driven, hands-on, student-engaged classroom. Math games are my jam! I say, "Show me a worksheet and I'll make it into a game!" Practicing math skills with games is far more engaging and just as worthwhile! I also believe incorporating the arts into content makes it more meaningful and memorable.
