I have been teaching for seven years and couldn't image myself in any other profession! I have always wanted to be a teacher since I began playing 'teacher' as a little kid. I have a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. In addition, I have earned my Reading Specialist certification which has helped me greatly in incorporating literacy and reading strategies/skills into my classroom teaching. My first teaching experience was in an urban school district as a special education teacher for students with a variety of disabilities from grades 9 to 12. I taught in a self-contained life skills and autistic support classroom as well as 9th grade learning support. I currently teach 6th grade social studies and english language arts. I am loving teaching in a middle school. This age group is a lot of fun!
My teaching philosophy is hands-on, minds-on. I believe that engaging students in the learning process is one of the most effective ways to reach students and get them excited about learning. I try not to focus too much on drilling students with content knowledge, although I believe content is important. Instead, I focus more on teaching students to use strategies and critical thinking skills to explore content and learn.
