I am a highly compassionate and approachable teaching professional with an unwavering commitment to education. I have taught for six years in the public school systems. Three years were dedicated to 5th graders and the other three to 7th and 8th graders at a middle school. Prior to teaching in the public school system I worked at the Ohio University Literacy Center and for ABLE (Adult Basic Literacy Education).
As a well-rounded educator with ESL, Adult GED, tutoring, and whole classroom instruction experience, I have had the chance to teach a diverse group of students including those challenged by autism, learning disabilities, noncompliant behavior, speech impairments, and learners who functioned below and above grade level. Consequently, I have gained in-depth knowledge of accommodating different styles of learners and incorporating effective methods to meet students’ unique needs. I encourage student learning by presenting comprehensible and stimulating lessons that facilitate all learning styles. I assist learners’ needs by incorporating creative learning centers, various forms of technology, hands-on activities, and fun manipulatives. These methods prove to stimulate students’ social, emotional, physical, and academic growth. In addition, I utilize these strategies to introduce new concepts, establish a connection between the classroom and everyday life, foster an exciting and engaging atmosphere, and teach fundamental skills. My goal is to foster and maintain an open, honest, communicative, and supportive classroom environment, in which each student feels safe, secure, special, and appropriately challenged.
I have won two awards. One was for “Meritorious Work in Research and Synthesis,” for music integration in classroom curriculum. The other was the "Ohio University Outstanding Achiever" award.
I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Middle Childhood Education Language Arts and Social Studies from Ohio University with certification in Orton-Gillingham Multi-Sensory Education. I have also taken extra coursework to establish my Mathematics, Science, and Reading endorsements. I have also earned a Master's in Educational Administration. I have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, solid instructional methods, and hands-on experience.
I cultivate and sustain strong working relationships with all members of the school community. I view diversity as strength, and parents and the community need to play an active role in student learning. The more faces involved; the greater the diversity will be present. When parents, community, and students work together, similarities will become apparent and worries over differences will diminish. I am comfortable in the classroom and I want to ensure this level of comfort to all of my future learners. I see validity and need for all teachers to self-reflect frequently and consistently. I act on my reflections in a timely manner for each learner’s benefit. There is much expected out of students. I propose to work harder than they are expected to, making sure they have the tools and eagerness to succeed.
