In years past, I've used general expectations as the basic "rules" in my classroom: Be respectful, be responsible, be safe. However, for middle school students, those don't seem to be specific enough for them to understand how to follow them. This

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am in my 6th year of K-12 education. My first year was spent teaching 9th & 10th grade, and the rest of my career has been in 7th grade. The schools at which I have taught have had large populations of socioeconomically disadvantaged families and English language learners.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Science comes alive when engineering is incorporated. While I have a passion for science, many students do not. I hope to teach students (1) why science is important, (2) how to enjoy science class, and (3) practical skills for their lives outside of class. Science has the unique opportunity to incorporate writing and math with engaging phenomena, pushing students to think critically and work collaboratively.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

B.S. Joint Chemistry & Biology, Harvey Mudd College; M.S. Ed. Curriculum & Instruction, Western Governors University

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I upload most of what I do on my class website: sciencewithhanks.weebly.com . I generally post a pdf version here for free as well. If you want prettier or more user-friendly versions (i.e. with instructions and modifications), that's what I ask for a little compensation for. I'm always up for collaborating or suggestions!
